Step
by Step Demonstration
Watercolour:
Evening, Blackwater River
I
was immediately attracted to this wonderful subject.
The sinking
sun created a shaft of light straight through the centre of the
subject, diffusing the background trees & cutting out the shapes
of the moored boats.
The water surface
shimmered with warm light. |

Materials
Used:
Paper:
Arches Block 140lb 'Not'
Colours:
(Winsor & Newton Artists' Quality tube Watercolours)
Raw Sienna, Raw Umber,
Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cerulean Blue, Cobalt Violet, Viridian,
Burnt Sienna &
Permanent Magenta.
Brushes: Nos.
2, 4, 8 &10 Sables
No 2 Rigger.
Masking Fluid
Step
1:
The drawing was undertaken
using a 2B pencil
Next, all the relevant
highlights were 'masked out' using Masking Fluid.
Initial washes using the
following colours were then prepared:
Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine
Blue, Cerulean, Viridian, Raw Sienna,
Raw Umber, Cobalt Violet,
Permanent Magenta & Burt Sienna.
The paper was then wetted
over its entirety. |

Step
2:
The paint was then added
to the damp paper, using predominantly 'pure' colours, allowing
the pigments to mix & diffuse on the paper.
The paper was then left to dry completely
before the next stage. |

Step
3:
The backdrop
of trees was added on to the now dry paper, but using a 'wet into
wet' method.
The mixes used
were:
Cobalt Blue
& Raw Sienna
Ultramarine
Blue & Raw Umber
Ultramarine
Blue & Permanent Magenta |

Step
4:
The middle ground boats
& Landing Stage were painted using mixes of:
Ultramarine Blue &
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Sienna & Ultramarine
Blue
Raw Umber & Cobalt
Violet
Cobalt Blue

5:
The 'near' boats were
painted using the following mixes:
Ultramarine Blue &
Burnt Sienna
Burnt Sienna & Ultramarine
Blue
Raw Sienna & Ultramarine

Raw Sienna & Cobalt

Step
6:
Some of the areas, previously
'protected' with Masking Fluid, were now tinted using a mix of Raw
Sienna & Cobalt Violet. |

Further details were added
to the Mooring Posts, reflections & Buoys.
