Watercolour Step by Step Demonstrations

'Winter Morning / North Duffield'

This small, atmospheric painting was undertaken in response to a recent frosty morning as I was travelling to give a watercolour workshop near York.

Step 1:

The image was drawn out on 'Arches' 300lb, rough paper using a 2B pencil. The sun and one or two other, small highlights were masked out.

Step 2:

The following colours were introduced to dry paper, allowing them to mix and merge resulting in an overall, diffused wash.

Raw Sienna, Permanent Rose, Cadmium Red, Burnt Sienna, Cobalt Blue, Cerulean and Ultramarine Blue.

Only pure colours were introduced used, ensuring that all the mixing took place on the paper.

Step 3:

The painting was completed by adding further information / details using fairly strong mixes of Cobalt Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Cadmium Red and Burnt Sienna. Some of these mixes were introduced when the painting was still damp and others on dry paper.

Step 4:

Finally, a little 'spatter' using White Gouache with a little Cerulean, was used in the foreground to give texture.
