Meaning of Sayings (6)

"Not Worth His Salt"

Meaning: Not very good at his job, doesn't deserve his wage.

During the days of the Roman Empire salt was an expensive commodity & soldiers were given money to buy salt & actually paid partly in salt, which they carried about their person, in leather pouches.

This payment was known as 'salarium', from the Latin word 'sal', meaning salt.

The modern word for wages, or 'salary', originates from this source.

Selby Watercolour Society Demonsration 14th May 2007

Many thanks to all at Selby Watercolour Society for making me & Liz so very welcome last night, we always look forward to what has become an annual visit! I think last night was the 12th year in succession I have demonstrated for you?
Below is the painting as it was at the end of the demonstration.

I decided to place further washes over the beach area, using Raw Sienna, Cobalt Violet Cobalt Blue & Permanent Magenta, grading the washes from light in the top of the beach under the boats, to darker at the bottom of the painting.
Random dots & marks were added to the beach to represent small rocks, pebbles etc., using Burnt Sienna / Ultramarine Blue & Ultramarine Blue / Burnt Sienna, being careful not to over state them.
Finally, I added two wheels & a figure for further interest.

I hope this information has been useful and as always, please contact me with any queries.
Looking forward to next year!
