The Meaning of Sayings (6)

Have you ever wondered where the saying "Dressed to kill" originated?
We tend to use it to describe someone we think is smart, fashionable & set to make a romantic conquest!!
Apparently, the phrase seems to have come from an army recruit, being interviewed in November 1881 by a journalist of an American newspaper, the Cambridge Tribune.
When asked how he felt in his shiny new uniform. Unimpressed by the splendour or the question he replied, "I'm dressed to kill"

Guisborough Art Club 19th July 2007

Thanks once again to you all for making me so welcome!

As promised here is the painting as it was when I left you all & after I had made the following alterations.
  • I lifted out some of the paint from the mooring posts as they were too dark.

  • Painted in the distant boat.

  • Added another wash of Ultramarine Blue & Burnt Sienna to the shadow side of the nearest gondola.

  • Added more reflections around the mooring posts.

As always if you would like to ask anything, please get in touch. Looking forward to seeing you again soon.

Many thanks to all those who joined me for my demonstration on Wednesday evening.

I deepened the shadows in the trees & grass with the following mixes:

  • Cobalt Blue

  • Permanent Magenta

I increased the warmth of the light on sunlit areas by glazing the following neat colours onto dry paper.

  • Indian Yellow

  • Aureolin

  • Cobalt Violet

  • Burnt Sienna

  • Cerulean Blue

I added slight detail to the tree trunks, fencing posts & farm implement by using the following colours:

  • Raw Umber & Cobalt Blue

  • Ultramarine Blue & burnt Sienna

  • Burnt Sienna & Ultramarine Blue

This is the completed painting.
