Mother's Day

If you didn't know..............

Mother's Day has been celebrated in the uk on the 4th Sunday in Lent since at least the 16th century.

Most churchgoers would worship at their nearest parish or 'daughter church' on Sundays throughout the year, and it was thought important for them to return, to worship at the "mother" church, (cathedral), at least once a year.

The return to the 'mother' church, on the 4th Sunday in Lent, became an occasion for family reunions. Most historians believe that young apprentices and young women in 'service' were released by their masters that weekend in order to visit their families, a time when Mothers would see their children maybe for the only time that year.

'Mother's Day' or 'Mothering Sunday' is now a day mainly used to celebrate and give thanks for mothers, although it is still recognized in the historical sense by some churches, with attention paid to Mary the mother of Jesus.

Happy Mother's Day!!

Menston Arts Club (Monday 4th February 2008)

Thanks to everyone who attended last night's demonstration at Menston Arts Club, I was made to feel very welcome
This is the Watercolour painting as it was when I left you all.

On viewing the painting in the studio this morning, I decided to add further Cerulean Blue washes to the fields in the foreground.

I also completed the trees & near hedgerow with mixes of:
Cobalt Violet & Raw Sienna
Ultramirine Blue & Burnt Sienna
Burnt Sienna & Ultramarine Blue

Additional 'darks' were introduced around the farmhouse to ensure it stood out from its surroundings.

The last decision I made was to crop half an inch from the bottom edge of the painting, as some light 'shapes' were too prominant in the bottom left hand corner.

A larger image of the completed painting can be viewed by visiting the 'Recent Additions Page' on my website.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me. Hope to see you all again soon.
