I have just completed my new book, "Painting with Pastels" & posted it off to Crowood Press.
Hopefully it will go to the printers for publication late July to early August this year!

Christmas 'Open Weekends' at Sundial Studio

Many thanks for the warm welcome from all those who attended my Watercolour demonstration last night.

Here is the unfinished painting:

The following steps were taken to complete the painting:

More textural 'marks' were made to the distant beach above the boats.

Additional detailing to the mooring ropes, accross the beach.

Final details added to the boats, such as numbering & the masts.

The finished painting - "High & dry / Staithes"

Many thanks to all who attended my Oil painting demonstration last night.

To complete the painting I made the following adjustments & added a few finishing touches.

The same pre-mixed colours were used to cool down some of the warmer tones in the distant trees & hedges on the left hand side.

I used my finger to soften some of the edges.

The lighter areas of snow on the track were developed further.

The snowy fields between the trees in the middle distance were lightened.

All the final details to the hedges, trees & grass were added.

This is the completed painting after I made the following adjustments:

A further 'wet into wet' watercolour wash , using pure Cobalt Blue, Raw Sienna & Cobalt Violet was introduced to the surrounding sand & wet mud. The wash was made slightly darker at the top of the painting around the boats & lighter & bluer through the centre section, to give the feeling of sky reflecting on the wet surface.

A few random marks were made in the foreground to hint at pebbles & small rocks.

The details of the boats were added using a mixture of Acrylic & Watercolour paint.

The mooring ropes were painted with a No 2 'Rigger' brush using Acrylic mixes of Cadmium Yellow, Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue & White, to produce a range of colours from Olive Green to neutral blue - greys.

Oakwell Art Club Demonstration 27th October 2009

Thank you all for making Liz & myself so welcome last night at your Group's meeting. We had a really enjoyable time, 'hope you did too?

As promised, this is the completed Pastel painting, after I have carried out the following adjustments:

I softened the sky slightly by blending the colours with my finger. I decided not to blend the colour completely in order to retain the 'hazy' appearance.

To reduce the 'warmth' of the colour of the beach, I worked back into the area, using two 'blue/grey' pastels

I applied further detailing to the flags, boat & fish boxes.

Finally, I softened the distant landscape & added a few highlights.

In order to complete the painting I adjusted the path of light in the water, using White Acrylic & Raw Sienna. I also added further details to the boats using Ultramarine Blue & light Red.

Exhibition & 'Book Signing' 11th & 12th September

Many thanks to everyone who attended the Preview of my exhibition 'Brushed with Light' at the Pannett Art Gallery on Friday night, with a special thanks to Martin Narey for kindly agreeing to 'open' the proceedings.

Liz & I managed to hang 97 works, a mix of Oils, Watercolours, Pastels & 6 Limited Edition Prints, so it's quite a varied show.

"Brushed With Light"

I will be holding an exhibition of paintings at the Pannett Art Gallery in Whitby from Saturday 12th September to Thursday 1st October 2009.

On show will be a collection of recent works in Oils, Watercolours & Pastel with a few of my early Oils, from the 70s, when I was just starting to learn how to paint.

Many of the paintings are included in my new book, "Painting Boats & Coastal Scenery"

To complete the painting, I carried out the following steps:

Continued 'blocking in'
Sharpened all the important edges with pastel pencils
Added details ie ropes, numbers, lettering etc.
Enhanced the reflections using pastel pencils

Celebrating 100 years of Whitby's Swing Bridge

If you are able to get to Whitby on Saturday 8th August, you might like to join in the celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the Swing bridge.

I will be showing this painting in an exhibition at the Pannett Gallery, in Pannett Park.

The exhibition will include paintings, drawings, photographs & archival paintings, all documenting the bridges 100 year history. Opening at 12:30pm for 3 weeks

There will be lots going on around the Town too, including a 'Sail Past', the Cleveland Police Band, the Marske Fisherman's Choir, Saltburn Victorian Society, Paul Nicholas School of Acting, Stakesby School Steel Band & the folk group, 'Coblers Monday', to name but a few!!

Painting Holidays in France for 2010

I'm really pleased to have been invited to tutor 2 Painting Holidays in France next year.

Both courses will be held in Angles sur I'Anglin, a medieval village deep in unspoilt rural France, south of the Loire Valley, about 45km from Poitiers, in the beautiful home of Nichole & John a spacious 15th Century house of character situated in one of the old medieval streets, close to the river & opposite a 12th Century chapel. They have a private pool & garden, with great views of the chateau ruins & woods.
