Watercolour Demonstration: 'January Snow / Egton / North Yorkshire'

This demonstration was on my October blog. The inspiration came from a wonderful day spent with friends, walking in the snow in Egton.

Step One

The image was drawn out using a 2B pencil and masking fluid applied to the lightest areas.
Weak washes were introduced onto damp paper using the following colours: Cobalt Blue, Cobalt Violet, Raw Sienna and Permanent Magenta.

Step Two

Some of the masking fluid from the middle distance was removed. The masked areas in the immediate foreground were left in place at this time.

Step Three

The distant hedgerow and trees were rendered and the cottages were developed further, using the same colours as in Step One.

Step Four

The distant hedgerow and trees were rendered and the cottages were developed further, using the same colours as in Step One.

Step Five

The painting was progressed to completion by adding the trees and further details to the cottages and foreground hedges.
To achieve this, Raw Umber and French Ultramarine were added to the other colours.
The addition of these colours enabling me to capture the darks without loss of transparency.
